Title: Shirts and Pants


Solve this problem yourself and develop a way to convince others that your solution is correct.

  • Stephen has THREE SHIRTS:
    • WHITE shirt, BLUE shirt, YELLOW shirt
  • He has TWO PAIRS OF PANTS:
    1. BLUE jeans, WHITE jeans
  1. How many different outfits can he make?
  2. What are each of the different outfits he can make?
  3. Write down your prediction of the number of outfits he can make which are different.
  4. Draw a circle around the number of outfits that you predict

Solve the following extensions to the Shirts and Pants problem. Share your solutions:

To make sure his pants stay up, his mother has made a rule that Steve must wear a belt every day. She has given Steven a new black belt.

Stephen now has:

  • Three SHIRTS: WHITE, BLUE, YELLOW
  • Two pairs of JEANS: BLUE, WHITE
  • One BELT: BLACK
  • How many different outfits can he make now?

Stephens mother would like Stephen to have more outfits.

She has only five dollars to spend on new clothes for Stephen.

She can buy him only one new item:

  • One red belt, one red shirt or one pair of red pants
  • What item do you think she should buy for him?
  • Write down the name of the item she should buy and how many new outfits you think Stephen could make if he includes his new item and draw a circle around your prediction.

Title: Mario's Problem

Solve the following extensions to the Shirts and Pants problem.

  • Mario has exactly sixteen (16) different outfits.
  • Decide how this might be possible.
  • Write down what pieces of clothing, and how many of each he might have.

Share your solutions and prove/convince us that your items can make exactly 16 different outfits (not more and not less).

Stephen has only:

  • Three SHIRTS: WHITE, BLUE, YELLOW
  • Two pairs of JEANS: BLUE, WHITE
  • One BELT: BLACK

Stephens mother would like him to have more outfits but she has only five dollars to spend on new clothes for him.

Today, is the Super Saturday and Steven's mother sets out with five dollars. She finds a store with a Sale that is offering: 'Buy any item for $5 and get one free' (get two of the same items for the price of one item).

  • What two new items do you think she should buy and add to his wardrobe to make the most number of outfits?
  • Write down the name of the new item she should buy that you think he could add to his wardrobe and would help him make the most number of outfits.

  2. What are each of the different outfits he can make?
  3. Write down your prediction of the number of outfits he can make which are different.
  4. Draw a circle around the number of outfits that you predict
