====== WEEKNITE - A STEAMpunks Science Challenge ======
=== NESA 2018 SCIENCE OUTCOMES ST3 - ELECTRICITY (Physical World) ===
++++ A STUDENT (Read more...) |
- describes how scientific understanding about the sources, transfer and transformation of electricity is related to making decisions about its use.
- uses scientific knowledge about the transfer of light to solve problems that directly affect people’s lives.
++++
=== NESA 2018 SCIENCE CONTENT ST3 ===
++++ ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS (Read more...) | provide a means of transferring and transforming electricity.
Students:
- identify potential risks and demonstrate safe use when using electrical circuits and devices
- demonstrate the need for a circuit to be complete to allow the transfer (flow) of electricity
- construct simple circuits incorporating devices, eg switches and light globes
- observe and describe how some devices transform (change) electricity to heat energy, light,
sound or movement, eg hair dryers, light globes, bells and fans.
++++
++++ ENERGY FROM A VARIETY OF SOURCES (Read more...) | can be used to generate electricity and this knowledge can inform personal and community based decisions about using these sources sustainably.
Students:
- research and present ideas about the different ways electricity can be generated, eg burning coal or natural gas; solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, wind and wave-generated electricity
- describe how scientific knowledge can be used to inform personal and community decisions about the use and conservation of sustainable sources of energy
++++
++++ LIGHT FROM A SOURCE (Read more...) |forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected and refracted.
Students:
- classify materials as transparent, opaque or translucent, based on whether light passes
through them, is absorbed, reflected or scattered.
- observe and describe how the absorption of light by materials and objects forms shadows,
eg building shading.
- gather evidence to support their predictions about how light travels and is reflected
- research, using secondary sources to gather information about science understandings, discoveries and/or inventions that depend on the reflection and refraction of light and how these are used to solve problems that directly affect people's lives, eg mirrors, magnifiers, spectacles and prisms.

=== Overview ===
* //Weeknite// is an immersive science challenge where students must use science to save friends and the world from a sticky end.
* Students are challenged to solve practical problems through the integration of scientific, engineering, artistic and technological tools that are used to demonstrate, synthesise, consolidate and evaluate their understanding about electromagnetism (electricity, light and properties of materials).
=== Outcomes ===
* Students learn new concepts about electricity.
* Students develop understanding by applying their learning and collaboration to solve a time-limited problem.
* Content is suitable for Stage2 and later: There are no 'in-app purchases', 'Battle Passes', 'Emotes' (aka dance moves) or 'skins'.
**Learning Tasks That Elicit Evidence of Learning** ((Dylan William - Formative assessment https://www.nwea.org/blog/2012/dylan-wiliam-the-5-formative-assessment-strategies-to-improve-student-learning/ ))
Open your Science book/Journal/sheet and briefly write down your name, the experiment title and date:
* Your Name(s): -----------------, ----------------
* The Title: Electricity #1
* Short Date: xx/xx/2018
Please spend five to ten minutes to write down what you think about each of the statements below (you may use drawings/images or refer to other sources of information)
- Are 'electricity' and 'electrical energy' just different ways of saying the same thing?
- Does an electrical generator make electricity?
- Does a battery store electricity?
- Does a circuit have to be closed (unbroken) for electricity to flow?
* At the end of this session, write down new answers to the same questions.
* Have you changed your mind about any of the answers you gave at the beginning of the session?
\\
=== Each discussion starts with one or more misconception(s) about electricity: ===
Students will be asked to explain their current thoughts about:
- Where does electricity come from?
- How is electricity made?
- Does electricity move quickly or slowly?
- What is an electricity generator?
- What is an electric motor?
- What is a battery?
- What is a conductor?
- What is an insulator?
- What is a circuit (how does energy get from the battery into the light globe)? ((Circuits - Sefton http://science.uniserve.edu.au/school/curric/stage6/phys/stw2002/sefton.pdf))
- What is a semi-conductor?
- What is a switch?
- What is a light?
- How 'safe' is electricity?

====== AND NOW, AT LAST... LET'S GET STARTED! ======
=== Hello Earthlings. Let me tell you about your mission. My name is Zero... Triple Zero! ===
{{ :events:visiting-alien-day:alien-640x480.jpg |My Name is agent Zero - Triple Zero!}}
**Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to work together to learn about electricity, and engineer a solution that will neutralise the //Fortnite Zombie'// power station and free the world.**
=== The Story So Far... ===
* The sudden arrival of an alien spacecraft at //your school// has resulted in 98% of the world's population being imprisoned by zombie-like creatures behind a force-field.
* The invasion is powered by power station which is protected by a deadly wall and heavily armed Zombie guards.
* Students must form Battle Teams whose mission will be to solve five problems whose solutions depend on an authentic, practical understanding of concepts about electricity and electromagnetism.
* Unknown to the Zombies, there is a spy in their midst who will pass on secret information from time to time. Professor //Newsy Wales// will pass information from the spy, //Triple Zero//, to all student Battle Teams via your overall team leader, //Captain Yourname Backwards//.
\\
====== NEWS-FLASH - MONDAY 2ND JULY 2018 ======
At 09:00am this morning, zombies from //Planet Fortnite// have installed a mind control device that has imprisoned the population of earth.
Your school is the only place on earth that remains free.
The Prime Minister has been taken prisoner by a Zombie faction which has rendered him helpless, so don't expect any help from politicians.
An inspired group of science students at //your school// have volunteered to fight this evil menace. They will be assisted by their teachers and a designated student **(Captain //Yourname Backwards//)** who is a visiting scientist from the **//Planet Voltaren//**. The Professor has a spy (agent 'Triple Zero') who works in the electrical power station that provides all of the //Planet Fortnite// zombie mind control energy.

====== SAVE THE EARTH... INVASION OF THE PLANET FORTNITE ZOMBIES ======
[[https://www.naturalreaders.com/online?s=V22rhtwna28kaoos0sck8ccgcs4.pdf&t=NaturalReader%20Document|{{ :2018:electricity:weeknite:zombies-640x360.jpg?640x360 |Fortnite Zombies}}]]
\\
**To ensure Earth's victory over the invading Fornite Zombie army, you must solve all four of the following problems. You must neutralise and/or destroy:**
**1. The Zombie surveillance system** - Used by Zombies to spy on your school
and to find out about all battle plans.
**2. The Zombie army** - Zombie defence forces carry weapons that can vapourise any person, animal or physical object that comes within five metres of the wall (even when the main wall force-field is turned off).
**3. The Zombie [[http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-force-field.htm|force field]] Generator** - Used by Zombies to prevent attack on their Zombies, and provide power for the Zombie control centre and the wall. The force-field will vapourise any physical object (including humans and animals) who attempt to come within five metres of the wall.
**4. The Zombie Wall** - Protects the Zombie Control Centre has an in-built, invisible portal that provides a gateway through which the Zombie armies can travel between Planet Fortnite and Earth .
**5. The Zombie electromagnetic energy generator** This must be the last item to be disabled.
* You MUST disable the generator to prevent the Zombies from returning after the wall has been destroyed because the wall contains the portal through which the Zombies travel between the Earth and //Planet Fortnite//.
====== YOUR MISSION HAS FOUR PARTS ======
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create and write down a plan to solve the following four problems:
=== 1. Disable Force-field ===
* Find a way to defeat, disable or get around the force-field using electromagnetic radiation.
=== 2. Disable the Zombie Guards ===
* Design and build a weapon to overcome or disable the guards
=== 3. Demolish the Wall ===
* Build a weapon to deliver a force that will demolish the Zombie power station wall and return all Zombies to //Planet Fortnite// (remember, you MUST be able to do this by using a non-physical object from a minimum five metres distance from the wall).
=== 4. Disable the Zombie Power Station ===
* Discover a way to access the control system and turn off the Zombie electricity generator.
* OPTIONAL: Create s student NEWS and documentary video team who will document progress and create a short news update every 30 minutes.
\\
**To beat the Zombies, you MUST complete ALL the FOUR PARTS (1, 2, 3 and 4 above in this, 'YOUR MISSION HAS FOUR PARTS' section)**
\\
====== DO YOUR RESEARCH, MAKE A PLAN, JOIN A BATTLE TEAM ======
* **Students will start by attending a 'briefing session' about electricity.** Use these newly-learned concepts to solve scientific problems necessary to free the world from the //Fortnite Zombies//.
{{ :2018:electricity:weeknite:marvel-team-640x520.jpg?640x520 |Join Captain Marvel's Team}}
\\
=== IMPORTANT HINTS TO GET YOU STARTED ===
- **Make sure you know what a 'force field' is** and what things won't be able to get through it?
- **Have a public discussion to decide on a battle plan** so that everyone knows what part they should play and/or what devices they need to construct.
- **Join a team:** You will work with maximum of five scientists per team co-operate on various missions to develop resources, construct traps and devices designed to neutralise the Zombie power source and free the world.
- **Teams must work together** to figure out a plan that can overcome the three main parts of the mission (listed in the 'Your Mission' section above)
- **Make a plan** Each team must develop and write down a plan. Submit it for approval by your leader/teacher.
- **Group plan sign-off** A quick discussion so that each group knowns what the other teams are doing so that each can work together efficiently. You must convince the other teams that your plan will work.
\\
=== IN-GAME REWARDS ===
Throughout the day, each battle team may gain rewards such as hints/information from a secret spy located in the Zombie camp. Teams must work together so that their own tasks are delivered on time and form part of unified strategy. If one group fails, the battle may be lost.
**ONLY WHEN ALL FOUR PARTS OF 'YOUR MISSION' have been completed and the wall has been destroyed** all of the Zombie weapons will stop working and the invaders will automatically be sucked back to //Planet Fortnite//. The world will then return to 'normal' and **your mission will be complete**.
